Learn more about the potentially dangerous and painful side effects of taking Elmiron®
Elmiron® is the name for pentosan polysulfate sodium–a prescription medication that people often take when they have interstitial cystitis (IC).
IC causes bladder pressure and pain, and Elmiron® works to relieve these types of discomfort.
Unlike other pain relievers, Elmiron® does not decrease inflammation, but it protects the bladder walls damaged by IC from certain irritants that cause pain and inflammation.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the drug for sale by Janssen Pharmaceuticals in 1996–and, Elmiron® remains the only drug on the market that relieves pain from IC.
Because up to 12 million adults in the United States suffer from IC–a chronic condition with no cure–many of these people regularly take Elmiron® to manage their symptoms.
Janssen Pharmaceuticals and its parent company, Johnson & Johnson, have been reluctant to issue a product recall due to the drug’s effectiveness–and they routinely fail to mention Elmiron®'s side effects, such as eye damage or maculopathy to new users.
These conditions can impact consumers who’ve used the drug to treat interstitial cystitis.
Under certain circumstances, consumers who suffer from unmarked Elmiron® side effects can pursue compensation for their losses.
More info on the more severe reactions to Elmiron®, including maculopathy and retinopathy
The more severe side effects of Elmiron® use have been documented in the cases filed since the drug’s release.
These side effects all tend to center around a person’s loss of vision–some of the most common include:
- Blurred vision
- Halo vision
- Reduced night vision
- Unilateral or bilateral blindness
- Vision impairment or loss
Other severe symptoms include retinal pigment epithelium atrophy–a condition that causes the photoreceptors in the eye to die off or malfunction.
In recent years, medical researchers linked Elmiron® to the development of maculopathy, which is a progressive eye disorder that can result in vision loss in both eyes.
While maculopathy does not often result in complete blindness, it deteriorates the central vision, the loss of which can cause “legal blindness” of 20/200 vision or worse.
There is no cure for maculopathy, though intensive treatment can slow progression.
Medical professionals have linked maculopathy to drugs like hydroxychloroquine and corticosteroids in the past.
In 2018, research studies started documenting incurable vision loss in patients who took Elmiron® long-term.
